Big Derby win away at Sandbach

Ladies' 1s took on third place Sandbach as it sought to cement its position at the pinnacle of the table. The opening exchanges were a nervy affair as the teams cancelled each other out. Triton won a couple of penalty corners but couldn't make these count. Sandbach pressed the table toppers hard but couldn't really threaten Emily Statham's goal. From a third penalty corner on 20 mins the visitors broke the deadlock, the resulting scramble saw the returning Lucy Salter forcing the ball home. The game remained even but Triton gradually got a hold through Lottie Wade and Skipper Vicky Bennion in midfield. A good run move led to a dangerous run round the right from Emma Wolfendale and her great ball across the D was turned in by Charlie Rutledge for 2-0 and her second in 2 games. Sandbach responded but the some great defending from Sarah Varley, the ever dependable Hannah Ford and the tigerish Lucy Williams who brilliantly slotted into the defence. Sandbach won a penalty corner on the half time whistle as Ford was harshly penalised. Swarming the D the host pulled a goal back from close range for a 2-1 half time scoreline to the visitors.

Feeling aggrieved Triton came out of the blocks like a mountain lion who'd had its tail foolishly trodden on. Within 30 seconds Alex Halliday had the ball in the net after some quick passing. The Visitors never looked back, Wolfendale & Lucy S attacked at pace down the right, Darcey Pawezowski tackling like a trojan on the left and linking up effectively with Charlie. The Skipper tackled anything that moved whilst Tash Griffiths stuck like glue to the opposition star player (check your pockets Tash, she might still be there) whilst Hannah Spears was a constant threat. 10 minutes into the half and Halliday waltzed through the Sandbach defence to flick the ball into the far corner, 4-1. Another penalty corner was won and this time Wade fired home from top D. A good Triton move saw Wolfendale attacking the D and she rifled into the far corner to cap off an excellent display and 6-1. Sandbach tried valiantly to claw back a consolation but Emily Statham was there whenever any threat was made. All in all a very efficient victory against a very good opponent who made the Ladies work hard for the result. Very well played.
