Triton Hockey Club welcomed the new 2021/22 season in style by hosting the Men’s Cheshire Plate on Saturday and a fabulous Club Day in glorious weather on Sunday. But the main event of the weekend was the official renaming of the new hockey pitch in memory of former player, chair and president Steve Wade, who sadly passed away in December 2020.
Steve was an unstoppable force in a 10 year campaign to retain community sports facilities on the old Manchester Metropolitan University campus, when this site was being sold for housing. The new facilities are a testament to Steve’s campaign and energies in the cause to build the Alsager Sports Hub.
Everyone at Triton Hockey Club was delighted that Steve’s widow Jan together with children Tom and Becky were able to unveil the plaque naming the hockey astro The Wade Pitch. Unfortunately youngest daughter and first Ladies’ Teamer Lottie was away working in Greece so unable to attend but witnessed the unveiling via FaceTime. The Club looks forward to her playing in the pitch, named after her dad, on her return next month, as brother Tom did on Club Day.
The Men’s 1s enjoyed a good campaign in the Plate competition. A strong opening performance saw off Warrington 4-0 with Mikey Calam scoring twice and Nathan Thorley and Tom Chaddock also netting. Sadly the Men lost the final 1-0 to local rivals Crewe Vagrants in a very close fought but entertaining encounter.
The Club’s league season senior begins on 25 September but pre-season training has already started. General training takes place at the Alsager Sports Hub each Tuesday evening starting at 6-45pm. Ladies’ training is similarly at the Hub on Wednesday evenings from 7-00pm.
Junior training for 9s and over begins on Thursday 9 September at the Hub beginning at 6-30pm until 7-45pm. Juniors aged 6 to 8 train at the Hub at 9-30am until 10-30am.
Anyone who would like to take part or would like further information can contact the Club through either tritonhockeyalsager@gmail.com or message its Facebook or Twitter pages. Everyone is welcome at Triton Hockey Club whatever ability or level.
